Parabens are a type of preservative used in a bajillion different beauty products to help prolong shelf-life and maintain product longevity. Lotions, haircare, soaps, you name it! Introduced in the 1950s, parabens, specifically butylparaben, methylparaben, and propylparaben (what even are those?), are often included in products to prevent growth of yeast, mold, and bacteria.

Why They Are Bad

When using beauty products that contain parabens, you’re inviting the ingredients within them to gain access to your entire body (eek!). People should stay away from parabens because studies show they can seep through the skin and end up in the blood stream and body tissue. Once they enter the body's tissue, parabens can mimic popular hormones and have an effect on its chemistry.
